I drove all day to Charlottesville to play at the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar (which seems like a really cool place) only to find out that it was a slow night and there was some booking mixup so there was no other band.
But the staff was awesome and danced on the counter while I played. And they let me sleep there.
Nicole found this Chinese restaurant that has secret mock meat so Susie and I went with her to check it out. First you have to know to ask for the alternative paper menu (which apparently they only have one copy of)...
It contains an item called "vegetarian chicken," which is mock meat, but it is served cold and it looks like no mock dish I've ever seen before. In fact, it doesn't look very appetizing... ...but it's good and it's your only option in Nashville.
You should: a) Know this already b) See it when you come to my house for a show or pizza/jeopardy night c) See it when you come visit Nashville and stay with me! (but do it soon because Portland, Oregon is always in the back of my mind)
I made this fettuccine lermano from my new tofu cookbook but I couldn't finish it because I put waaaaaay too much garlic in it. Plus I couldn't find one of these... ...even at the asian grocery store. Maybe that would have made it taste better.
It isn't often that I get much out of abstract art, but I found Look, See a little while ago and it blows me away every time I check in on it. These html drawings are so gorgeous in their simplicity. They're so expertly crafted to utilize and break out of the limitations of html tables. I seriously get really excited when I look at the site. I wish I could make these.
All my friends had to go to work, so I went to the Natural History Museum to check my bags and get out of the cold.
When I was little I called it the dinosaur museum.
At night I went to the anti-hootenanny at the Sidewalk Cafe. There were some hits and some misses - this guy took Bob Dylan's "Talkin World War III Blues" and changed the lyrics so it was about the internet.
I generally prefer doing everyday things with people I'm visiting - rather than doing touristy stuff. In Manhattan, the Trader Joe's gets so busy on Sundays that the line wraps around the inside of the store. I drew a diagram:
When I got to TJ's apartment in Brooklyn he showed me this video and I laughed so hard that I cried. I'm laughing right now just thinking about it.
Pete's Candy Store is a weird venue - they pretty much just let you use their back room.
Brett, Laurel, and Jennifer took me to see the Christmas crowds in Manhattan and did some shopping.
I used to think I'd never get over Nora Jane.
I played at Goodbye Blue Monday in Brooklyn. Jason and Melanie, Josh and Nick, and Nora and Jordan - old Richmond friends - came to see me. The last band handed out crayons and paper so we sat around drawing crazy things like a huge air freshener toppling over on a cottage in the dust bowl.
Actually I used to drop the "h" all the time in high school because I had to for Spanish class and I just left it out in rest of the world, too. If I were in Richmond, I'd scan one of my old high school IDs where my name is spelled without the "h" to prove it.
