When I hit a guard rail and tried to fix it myself, 2001

I couldn't get the new fender to fit and had to take it to a body shop. This was the last time I tried to fix a car myself.

Whiskey Balls

Kelli Shay is having a super 8 film of hers shown in New York, so she's selling chocolate whiskey balls to help fund the trip. You should buy some! She'll deliver within the Nashville area. There are also peanut butter balls available for teetotalers. Email her at kellishay@gmail.com.

Driving Back to Nashville

I stared at this for 9 hours.

If you're ever in Salem, Virginia, stop in Macado's and get a Molly Brown. I promise you won't regret it.

Back to driving.

A Trip to Carytown

Kendall tried on hats.

Matt looked at books.

Our first run-in in two years. No atom bombs went off.

This piece of pie was $5.50 in the coffee shop?!?!? An entire pie was that price in the grocery store...

Why did no one tell me this existed?

Good night.

A snowy night in Richmond

It was snowy but that didn't stop me from driving into the city where I was introduced to fried cheese at The Village.

Richmond

Mom, Anne, and I got lunch at the Mediterranean Bakery - one of the few unique and locally-owned places in the suburbs.

Then I got to rip up this book so it could be recycled while cleaning at Mom's house.

I played at Rumors Boutique at night with Scott Burton and Cold Toast, pictured, who were like Animal Collective light. I mean that only as a description, I hope that doesn't sound jerky.

Owl print and a Big Gulp.

Charlottesville -> Chapel Hill -> Richmond

It snowed overnight while I was sleeping at the Tea Bazaar in Charlottesville...

...So I had to drive to Chapel Hill at 45 miles per hour. I hit some ice at one point and almost slid into the guard rail. But I ended up getting there safely.

Skylight Exchange is looking more like a junk store than I remember.

While driving I had fantasies of doing more long-term touring, but playing to empty rooms two nights in a row put an end to that kind of thinking.

After playing in Chapel Hill, I drove to Richmond and got a late night snack with Anne at 3rd Street Diner. We've known each other for 20 years.

Charlottesville

I drove all day to Charlottesville to play at the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar (which seems like a really cool place) only to find out that it was a slow night and there was some booking mixup so there was no other band.

But the staff was awesome and danced on the counter while I played. And they let me sleep there.

The only mock meat in Nashville...

Nicole found this Chinese restaurant that has secret mock meat so Susie and I went with her to check it out. First you have to know to ask for the alternative paper menu (which apparently they only have one copy of)...

It contains an item called "vegetarian chicken," which is mock meat, but it is served cold and it looks like no mock dish I've ever seen before. In fact, it doesn't look very appetizing...

...but it's good and it's your only option in Nashville.

A Little Sick

I don't get sick all the time like I used to, but I woke up yesterday with a sore throat and sinus headache. It makes working difficult.

Talk Radio and Making Dinner

"This American Life" makes me cry...

and so does chopping onions - even though I can't smell them.

We have a globe for a light in our kitchen...

You should:
a) Know this already
b) See it when you come to my house for a show or pizza/jeopardy night
c) See it when you come visit Nashville and stay with me! (but do it soon because Portland, Oregon is always in the back of my mind)

Futticini Lermano

I made this fettuccine lermano from my new tofu cookbook but I couldn't finish it because I put waaaaaay too much garlic in it. Plus I couldn't find one of these...

...even at the asian grocery store. Maybe that would have made it taste better.
