Trying to start playing shows again

I'm trying to get into playing shows here in Portland, but I don't know anybody so that makes it hard to book anything. So I swallowed my pride and checked out a few open mics.

Here was the scene at one:

And this was another one:

At both of them, I turned around and left as soon as I walked in.

Merry Christmas!

I thought about making and mailing Christmas cards but finals and snow kept me from it. This is what it would have looked like, except I wouldn't have been wearing a Christmas sweater and it wouldn't have been in color (those things are much easier in digital). So this version is better... except that you don't get it in your mailbox with a heartfelt personalized note from me inside.
Anyway... is it giving anyone any ideas?!? Anyone?!

Biking through downtown

I was riding my bike through downtown during rush hour on a street with streetcar tracks. There were lots of cars and I was worried about getting my tire caught in the tracks or a streetcar coming so I got off and walked.
Then this girl zipped by riding right down the center of the tracks. I figured she knew what she was doing and that I'd be safe if I followed her.

But then when she stopped at the next red light, she fell off her bike.

New York Day 2

I generally prefer doing everyday things with people I'm visiting - rather than doing touristy stuff. In Manhattan, the Trader Joe's gets so busy on Sundays that the line wraps around the inside of the store. I drew a diagram:

When I got to TJ's apartment in Brooklyn he showed me this video and I laughed so hard that I cried. I'm laughing right now just thinking about it.

Pete's Candy Store is a weird venue - they pretty much just let you use their back room.

Seth Moore and Chris Freeman's Attempt to Sneak In to Bonnaroo

Apparently it is somewhat common for Middle Tennessee residents to sneak into Bonnaroo. Seth Moore had done it in previous years and asked me if I wanted to come along this year. I thought it would be a fun adventure, so I went along.

He said he knew a safe spot to leave the car that was pretty close to the camping area. Security, however, was tighter this year.

So we drove around looking for another place to sneak through the fence and found these kids from New Jersey hanging out in a pull-off by a cell-phone tower. They said they could lead us to a good spot.

However, they drove like crazy drunks and switched lanes faster than we could keep up, so we lost them in traffic. We decided to walk back to the cell phone tower to try to get through the fence there. We had to pass this campground, and as we did, we were stopped by a dude.

Then Seth had an idea about how to get around the campgroud and the dude.

Then we drove home.

We went to Murfreesboro and ended up playing music at Lin's house for like 3 hours. That smoothed over any unhappiness from the failed adventure. All is well now.

Bike

Since I've moved to Nashville, I think I've ridden my bike five times. This means that every time I do ride it, my lungs are very unhappy.

Ohhhhhhhh how I long for the days when I lived in a bikable city.... I will live in one again!!!

Administrative Assistants' Day

My coworkers were really nice to me on Administrative Assistants' Day!

Compare that to a regular day at work:
